The well-formed idea

As stewards of our organizations’ resources, we are the ones who need to evaluate various possibilities. We need to be the ones to differentiate the ideas that will lead to the greatest benefit to our organizations. To do this, we need to have a consistent way of comparing ideas to each other (see the the principles of The CIO Code). If we expect to succeed at fostering an environment conducive to innovation, our process will need to be consistent AND efficient.

We’ve all been there: a senior executive who has the power to make your life miserable e-mails you at 3:00 a.m. and has an “idea,” like adding a blog to the Web site, integrating some new piece of data from one place to another, implement SharePoint, whatever. Regardless, it’s going to be a lot of work.

What do we do? We want to be innovative, but this just looks like a headache. . .
